Issues with
Adhesion
Adhesion issues
There are a wide variety of stoma pouches available to choose from, with a whole set of features. But when given a choice, members of Colostomy UK rated adhesion as the most important feature when selecting a stoma pouch.* There’s good reason for this too. Poor adhesion can result in a variety of issues such as skin irritation, odour and leakage.
Solutions for adhesion issues
Good level of adhesion can help reduce leakage and provide greater comfort resulting in greater peace of mind. If you’re having issues with your pouch adhesion, take a look at the solutions below.
Check your stoma pouch
If your stoma pouch fits correctly and your skin has been cleaned and prepared, you should achieve a good seal and the adhesive should not lift when wearing your pouch.
If you do have adhesion issues, you can try re-measuring your stoma to ensure a snug fit.
If adhesion is still a problem for you, it may be time to consider alternative stoma pouches that fit your body better. Bodies and stomas come in all different shapes and sizes, so if a stoma pouch isn’t quite working for you, it might be time to try something new.

Make sure your skin is prepped
To ensure a secure fit, check your skin is dry and all previous adhesive residue has been removed. Also watch out for standard skin creams, as some can affect how well the adhesion will stick to your skin.
Hair growth can also affect how well the pouch sticks to the skin. If you’re a little hairy around your stoma, consider shaving the area every few weeks, being careful not to nip the stoma itself.
Healthy skin is important and allows for a good seal around your stoma. Products such as skin barrier films can help protect the skin from damage and provide a base for stoma pouches to stick. Medical adhesive removers can also be useful as they help you to gently remove the hydrocolloid from the skin.
