Pouch leakage problems
For some ostomates, leakage can feel like their worst nightmare, especially if they’re out of the house or surrounded by other people. For others, just the fear of their pouch leaking can make them feel like they don’t want to socialise or join in many of the activities they did prior to surgery.
Solutions for leakage issues
The good news is that a well fitted stoma pouch, with a small number of supporting stoma management products should reduce the risk of leaks. If you do find that your pouch leaks, there are a number of options you can try to help you feel more secure and enjoy life without the worry of an unexpected leak.
There are a number of options to try and stop leakages:
What might be the right pouch for one ostomate, might not be the right pouch for someone else. Bodies and stomas come in all shapes and sizes and you may benefit from trialling some alternative pouches to see if they are a better choice for you. In addition, your body and your stoma can change over time, so the pouch that used to fit you so well a few years ago, might now be causing issues and alternatives need to be considered.
If you’d like to try our naturfit® range, please visit our samples page here where you can order free samples of our one-piece stoma pouches, rated highly by ostomates for its strong adhesion.

Sometimes a change in output can cause leakage problems. This may be due to a different diet or perhaps a bug that you’ve picked up. If the output change lasts for a number of days, it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional.
If output can often be quite loose and this is usual for you, a solidifying agent can convert liquid output into a manageable gel and help to reduce the likelihood of leaks.
Looking after the skin around your stoma is important to help with stoma pouch adhesion, which in turn helps with keeping your pouch secure. A protective film can help by forming a barrier between the skin around the stoma and the adhesive.
