Stoma assessment tool: Odour

Is your diet affecting odour?

For some ostomates, certain foods can increase smells. These could be unique to you but more common foods that cause a smell include asparagus, baked beans, broccoli, fish, eggs and garlic.

Is your pouch too full?

If your stoma pouch fits correctly and it is not overly full, there should be no smell, apart from when changing it. If there is a noticeable smell, check the pouch for leakages, including small leaks under the hydrocolloid. Also ensure that you regularly empty your pouch so there is no opportunity for the output to overflow or leak.
