Having a stoma didn’t affect my pregnancy
When I got pregnant, I was worried about things like is my bag going to stay on, what is my stoma going to look like? There was no one to answer these questions, and not a lot of information out there to read.
A lot of people worry whether you can even get pregnant with a stoma, or would the pregnancy be complicated. Now that I have gone through it, I can talk about it.
You can definitely get pregnant with a stoma, I did.
I cannot speak for everyone, but I didn’t really have complications relating to my pregnancy. I did have a stoma and a hernia while I was pregnant. The hernia itself caused a bit of a complication in the end but not to my pregnancy.
My doctors were brilliant, and I had a smooth pregnancy overall.
It made absolutely no difference to my bag.
I didn’t have to change my diet
When you are pregnant you are told not to eat certain foods. I was told the same, and I followed those. But other than that, I didn’t have to change my diet at all. I ate the things I always eat, and it was completely fine.
As my bump got bigger…
… My stoma did increase a little bit in size, but you would expect that. There is a lot of pressure on the belly so that is totally understandable but wasn’t an issue.
Also, it was sometimes difficult to change my bag as my bump got bigger. It got harder to see the stoma and the bag, but you’d expect that.
My bag never budged or leaked. It was completely fine.
Having a stoma and being pregnant is possible
It is. Your doctors will put you on the right care and you might have a few more scans than usual, but as daunting as it sounds, it is completely doable.
You can still go through a healthy pregnancy just like everyone else.
